The CCF exists in over 300 schools all over the UK and offers young people aged 13-18 (Year 8-13) a broad range of challenging, exciting, adventurous and educational activities. The aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. Each unit or contingent is an educational partnership between the school and the Ministry of Defence.
If you are interested in joining or want to find out more information for your child, further details can be found on the CCF website (http://combinedcadetforce.org.uk/) or by calling Mr Waddle at school.
On the 18th March 2017 18 pioneering pupils braved the wild Northumbrian weather to embark on their first exercise as BCHS Combined Cadet Force(CCF) cadets. They started on Saturday morning at Napier Barracks Gateshead, shooting the cadet air rifle, with all cadets putting their recent training to excellent effect. After this they traveled to Albemarle Barracks near Hexham, home of the 3rd Royal Horse Artillery to practice shelter building, camouflage and concealment, cooking in the field and finished off the day with a navigation exercise. The cadets then had tea and settled down for the evening. The wind gradually picked up to around 25 mph with 40 mph gusts by 2 in the morning, but the bashas (shelters) they had built all survived and staff were greeted with happy smiling faces in the morning. To finish off the weekend they had took part in an archery session and again the cadets excelled. All staff and cadets returned back to BCHS for 1200 on Sunday tired but happy.
This is the culmination of over a years work to get the contingent in the position to go out on exercise, the Contingent Commander 2Lt Dave Waddle described how proud he was of his pioneering 18 cadets at the effort and determination they had shown over the weekend.
There are still places available for pupils in year 8 and above if they think they have what it takes to be part of the CCF@BCHS. Year 7 parents your children will be able to join as soon as the reach 12 years old and are in year 8. Keep an eye out for taster days for interested pupils from all year groups.
